A Deadly Threat In Your Diet

by Roland Beauregard on February 18, 2010

As martial artists we spend a lot of time practicing to be ready for deadly threats from outside assailants. For the most part we expect these assailants to be other people, but the most deadly threats we face each day are not from other people but toxins in our environment that affect our health. The number one thing that affects our health most is our diet – what we put into our bodies. Coach Freedman has talked many times about how important your diet is to your training and readiness. You can practice all the techniques you want but if you are not keeping your body healthy, all that practice is a waste of time – your body will break down when your training is needed most.

One of the most dangerous and prevalent ingredients in our food today is High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). The manufactures would have us believe that this is a safe substance but that is far from the truth. HFCS is a major contributor to:

• Insulin resistance and obesity
Elevated blood pressure
Elevated triglycerides and elevated LDL
• Depletion of vitamins and minerals
• Cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis and even gout

You need to read Dr. Joseph Mercola’s article on HFCS at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/sugar-may-be-bad-but-this_b_463655.html

If you are overweight, diabetic or have any health problems you need to get this out of your diet now. If you are healthy and want to remain that way get this out of your diet now.

As a martial Artist your body is your weapon. Feed it properly and it will perform for you.

You know . . . The sad fact of this matter is that we generally know sweeteners are bad. What is even sadder is that we don’t care. We eat to PLEASE ourselves instead of FUEL ourselves. We are a self-centered race of beings and our focus is squarely on our immediate gratification. No wonder our kids are getting fatter, and lazier . . . it’s the example we are setting for them. We are leading them by example into ruin!!

We all know that fat, sugar (of whatever form), and salt are DELICIOUS!! The good stuff . . . kinda bland compared to the bad stuff.

As Martial Artists, we have chosen a lifestyle that is not the norm. People watch us to see what we are doing because they know we are different. Like it or not, people are judging us, and our Martial Art by how we look and act. What is your body saying about your Martial Art?

We must eat only what we need. Read Teri Tom’s book, and learn about your needs. Adjust your diet to fuel yourself, and give your body what it needs to achieve peak performance.

We are responsible for our bodies. These fragile and tempermental soft shells are all we have, and we need to care for them . . . when they are gone, so are we!!

The bottom line is that we are representing our Martial Art. Our bodies are an outward reflection of our inward commitment. Let’s lead by example, shall we?

Please, eat carefully . . . everyone is watching your example!!
