Are Throwing Knives Effective?

by Roland Beauregard on January 15, 2010

Jesse Crouch posted this video on his blog (The Martial Arts Explorer). I had to re-post it here. I do not think that this guy Nikolas LLoyd has a very good argument on why not to carry throwing knives but his presentation is very entertaining.

Hi Roland,

I like this guy, he is funny. But he brings up a few good points here. First point is if you throw your weapon away, it is gone.. or better yet you now gave it to your enemy. But any one who carries a blade & knows how to use one will always most likely carry three or more – if they were planning on throwing it. There are some good reasons for throwing a knife & not always are for killing your opponent. Some times you throw for a distraction. Some times you throw to make a noise across the room to help your opponent look else where away from your hidden direction so you can either get away or make your rush attack work.

Secondly, some people use to coat (cover) their throwing spikes or throwing stars with a deadly poison. Some times these poison could kill but most of the time they would cause horriable infections. Some throwing stars were huge & very heavy. Believe me if you got hit by one of these you would have a very bad day!

Third, some times the shock from the weight of the throwing weapon like a huge bowie knife – hammer – throwing axe etc.. would cause death. The knife didnt always have to enter into the anatomy to cause death. Some times crippling your opponent would be more effective than killing. It all depends on the situation.

Some times we throws knives just to relax.
It is very meditative and enjoyable.

Some people have to throw for hunting. But you can hunt with a stick or rock as well.

Some people throw knives for sport.
It all depends on the Nature of what you want to throw for.. but it is a good skill to develop and have.

It is better to have and not need – than – to need and not have!

This is my two cents on this video Roland.
I like his comment on if the knife stuck into the wall, then the point would not have hit its mark.. he was right in saying that.

Thanks for the comment Coach. I knew that this would spark some debate.

Self Defense Knives January 26, 2010 at 4:31 pm

lol this guy is funny, there are pros and cons on knives but I would agree that the argument isn’t very good at all. and I some what feel that he is joking… lol

Although Chances of killing someone by throwing a knife is not probable so is one shot stab kills.

but the main purpose of knife throwing in my opinion is a combination of a physiological advantage and wounding before engaging for the kill, capture, or the neutralization of the threat.

I think throwing anything in a self defense situation can be useful. If that thing has a sharp point on it and you can make that point stick in its target, all the better. I can imagine the psychological effect of seeing that knife sticking out of you. I have heard serious knife people use the expression “Two to throw, one to go”. means that if the throwing knives do not do the job, they are holding a knife for the close in work. I think your mental state (whether you are the attacker or the defender) is going to determine the outcome in any situation. Check out these post , Weapons Sensitivity Training and Block Check and Counter, there is good information there on training with knife and stick.
