Cane Fighting Techniques

by Roland Beauregard on April 7, 2010

caneknife If you missed it, here are some highlights from the cane workshop on March 28. We had a good group and everybody was excited about learning the cane techniques. Coach Freedman had all the participants take a cane and proceeded to go over some of the uses for self defense. He started with angles of attack and showed the blocks from those attacks. He then proceeded to show a number of different defenses using the cane. Coach Freedman stressed that you can do the same things with a stick or an umbrella. He was just showing the principles that could be applied.

Coach Freedman’s senior student Roberto Davila (better known as Indio) was there to help with the demonstrations and to assist students. He got the privilege of putting on the sparing helmet and getting his head wacked (see video). He seemed to survive intact.

Everyone had a good time. Nobody got hit with all the canes flying around, which is a testament to Coach Freedman’s method of training slow. Phil Duldulao brought his camera to film the event and a big pot of his famous soup that was of course delicious.

The next workshop will be in April and will cover defense against bigger and larger attackers. Keep posted for the details on that one.

Here is the video that Phil shot for at the seminar. Get out your canes and start to practice your defense drills.

I keep trying to convince Kelly that I should be allowed to carry a walking stick.

I may just have to fake an injury here.

Awesome vid!

Thanks for you interest in the cane work video. Coach Freedman does not have any books or videos on this subject. He teaches this in his Jujutsu classes and occasionally has a seminar on the subject. He may post some more videos in the future.

Hi Kevin Garwood,

No I do not have books or DVDs at this time – but we are in development of a book and DVD on cane & walking stick for sale in the future.

When it is ready we will post it up here.
I make these free videos here to help people who cant afford to pay for self defense lessons at a martial art school (Dojo).

So I was hoping that I might be able to reach out to good law abiding people – family people who may need some help in this area of self protection. These videos are for them, and also these videos I dedicate to all out troops and their families who are out there. So some of the troops family can learn how to protect them selves while their love ones are away fighting and dying for our Freedoms here.

Our world is becoming a very violent place to live in lately. Also it seems as though some laws here in the USA (depending on your State) are geared more towards helping the criminal get off & punishing the law abiding family man or woman. This enrages me.. so I make these videos.

Self defense in today’s World is a necessity.
It use to be a luxury where you could leave it or take it. But now, We need it!

I teach a once a month self defense class on different topics for self protection. I keep my price very low & I give out a lot of information in just two hours worth of class time. I do this because people really need some thing that works now & not ten years from now. Some thing that is easy to learn but extremely effective out on the street.

Afterwords we have food & drinks (no alcohol)
free of charge to all who take part in my workshops. I also go over any questions on just about any topic that people wish to ask me regarding self protection. So really they are getting one on one private coaching and good food for $35.00 they also get to meet other family like minded people here and from different State and some fly in from different Countries to attend these workshops. Crazy I know, but they love it!

I will repeat my cane workshop again & may be film some different ideas & angles.. what would you like to see or know about our cane methods?

Take care & much Respect out to you Kevin Garwood,

Coach Peter Freedman

Thank you Dan Cosgrove

Well back in the day the Gentlemen would always carry a walking stick (cane) usually with a hidden sword inside.. for self defense. They would also study some fencing tactics to help them to be better prepared for any violent encounter that may occur.

I love to collect different types of sticks – walking sticks & canes. My wife is about to throw me & my sticks out of the house.. I have too many now.. I still collect them he he he..

For self protection, these are a great tool.
My friend Michael Blackgrave sells some good ones if you go to my face book page & write to him. He is in Texas I believe.

Some look really nice. I have a really nice cane I bought in Boston Mass in Chinatown.
It is Chinese hardwood with lots of knots all over it. It looks really cool. I remember seeing the old Chinese men using them when I was a kid growing up in Boston. Now I have my own.

Thank you for watching my videos, I love making them & I make them for people who cant make it here. Also for those who cant afford lessons.

Take care & keep watching our videos.
I really appreciate you viewing them.
More on the way..

With much Respect
Coach Peter Freedman..
