Real street fighting is very dangerous and can have consequences both physical and legal. If some one is trying to cause us grave injury we must take action to defend ourselves. Coach Freedman’s Student David Weinberg presents this video on real street fighting. It is a fast paced demonstration of Freedman’s Method Ketsugo Jujutsu for defense against empty hand, weapons, and multiple attackers. It shows the simplicity, creativity, and effectiveness of Coach Freedman’s techniques.
If you watch closely you’ll see that most of the techniques consist of hidden strikes and multiple joint breaks that are all performed in one or two fluid movements. That is critical for defending against multiple attackers where time is of the essence.
Please note that some of the techniques are killing techniques. We learn these techniques to have the knowledge that if they are executed in this manner they will cause great harm. Knowing this we avoid using these techniques unless we are in grave danger. We realize that in the aftermath of a deadly encounter we may be facing legal action. If we are charged with using deadly force we must justify that to a court of law. There have been many incidents of people using martial arts to defend themselves and then ending up in jail for using excessive force. Coach Freedman teaches how spot and avoid trouble in order to avoid these dangerous situations. But once we are in a dangerous situation we must take what ever action is necessary to defend ourselves. His training gives the student the confidence to act properly in a violent encounter, avoiding physical injury and legal action.

Watch the video and pay close attention.

The video starts out with a long pan of pictures of Guro Grande George Brewster Coach Freedman’s beloved Arnis teacher. this man was a great influence on Coach Freedman and many other Arnis masters. Mr.. Brewster, as he was fondly called, died in 2006. You can read his obituary in the Filipino Martial Arts Digest here.

Coach Freedman gives some good tips on putting your opponent into an arm lock. This also goes along with his previous video on slipping a punch.

Coach Freedman’s method of knife defense is the best I have ever encountered. He constantly emphasizes the dangers of an edged weapon attack and the skill it takes to defend yourself in such a situation. He is constantly training his students in sensitivity to control an attack with a knife. The drill he teaches is very effective in redirecting an edged weapons attack. Watch him in this video as he explains what is needed to survive an encounter with an edged weapon.

Flow Coach Scott Sonnon posted this video about an Indian wrestling group. After watching the video, I will say that I was impressed by the work and dedication of these people. Kusthi wrestling is an ancient wrestling tradition that is practiced in Varanasi, one of the world’s oldest cities. These men live a celibate life where they practice wrestling and bodybuilding along with their spirituality. Kusthi is losing the state support it once had and these dedicated practitioners are trying to keep the art alive.

Watch this video of the rigorous practice they endure every day. Compare it to your own martial arts practice.

This is a continuation of the Aki and Ju discussion at the February workshop. Coach talks about understanding the principles and concepts of any martial arts. Even though Coach’s main art is Jujutsu, he explains the focus of the workshop is to give ideas not teach a particular martial art. If we can understand these ideas, we can apply them to whatever martial art we may practice. He then goes on to demonstrate how to use the opponents energy to control them.

Watch and learn to be “cool” like Coach Freedman.

Here is a video of me back in 1995 doing Gun Defense drills. I actually had guns pulled on me growing up in Boston Mass. These ideas do work well and yes there are people who walk up on you and get close, then pull out a gun and hold you up. I have never seen some one hold up a person with a gun from across the street and I have seen a lot of crime in Boston Mass while living there in my days.

Enjoy, learn and protect yourself.

At the February work shop Coach Freedman gave an in depth lecture on the concepts of Aiki and Ju. He feels that these concepts are frequently misunderstood. He believes that if we are going to study martial arts we need to understand what these terms mean and how they apply. Coach with his usual humor and wit managed to get us to understand what these principles were and how they were applied to arts like Aikido and Jujutsu.

After the lecture he physically demonstrated how these principles apply. All the participants then joined him on the mat to practice. The workshop was enjoyed by all that attended. Michael Moore (not the director) who runs Michael Moore’s Martial Arts in Beautiful Westport, MA. commented “Mr Freedman is a great teacher I loved how he shares laughs with his students. We do the same all the time, keep it fun and enjoyable, not like a military camp.”

Here is the video of the lecture. Watch and enjoy.
