At a recent class Coach Freedman gave his explanation of a combat martial art. This is his pragmatic view of what needs to be done to defend yourself. Real self defense may not be pretty, it only needs to be effective. Of course the techniques he is describing are not what we aspire to. We aspire for more humane techniques, rather then poking out eyes and breaking necks. What he is saying is that we learn these thing first, they give us confidence that we can defend ourselves. Then we train to be effective at self defense without all the mayhem. This higher martial art takes much time and practice.
Please pay close attention to what Coach is saying in this video. He is not advocating violence, he is advocating training to avoid violence.
