Your martial arts grip is one of your most important assets for self defense. If you have a weak grip or weak hand your ability to be able to defend yourself or a family member will falter big time. If your grip is too weak, your joint locks will be weak as well. So will some of your throws. But what will suffer most is your ability to hold onto your opponent during grappling and your ability to use your pressure points to unhinge your opponent. Your strong grip is one of your most important tools in your tool bag besides your footwork and eyesight.
A weak grip equals weak confidence during battle. You will know it in your subconscious mind if you are at close quarters and you have to strike your opponent or grab hold of them. You just will lack the true confidence you need to get the job done. Strong grip equals a strong mind.
Here is a great great grip machine that I recommend. The Ivanko Super Gripper is adjustable to all levels of hand strength. I am not profiting by making this recommendation. I have one and I love it and I just want you to pick one up and start working your grip ASAP!
Remember a weak hand equals a broken hand in battle.
You can check out the Functional Hand Strength site for more grip strength information and instructions.

A strong grip also typically means a strong fist and thus strong punches.
Bruce Lee had that crazy weight-plate grip exerciser, and I’m not one to argue with his thinking.
Thanks for the head’s up on the Functional Hand Strength blog, it looks really interesting.
Very true about the strong fist and punches. I would like to hear more about that Bruce Lee exercise.
